Terrifying & True | Jasmine Richardson & Jeremy Steinke: The Medicine Hat Family Murders

Twelve-year-old Jasmine Richardson and her 23-year-old boyfriend Jeremy Steinke planned the murder of her family in Medicine Hat, Alberta, after her parents tried to end their relationship.

On April 23, 2006, Marc and Debra Richardson and their eight-year-old son were found killed inside their home. Jasmine was initially treated as a missing child, but emails, online messages, and evidence recovered by investigators pointed to a conspiracy between her and Steinke. Their relationship had developed through a shared gothic identity, violent fantasy, and Steinke’s claim that he was a centuries-old werewolf.

Terrifying & True traces the age difference, the parents’ attempts to protect their daughter, the messages discussing murder, and the evidence presented at separate trials. It also asks how a fantasy of forbidden love crossed into a planned family massacre without treating the “werewolf” persona as an excuse or a supernatural explanation.

Richardson was convicted under Canada’s youth justice system and received the maximum youth sentence: six years in custody followed by four years of community supervision. Her sentence ended in 2016 after extensive treatment and monitored reintegration. Steinke was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life with no parole eligibility for 25 years. The episode examines both accountability and the difficult question of whether a child convicted of extraordinary violence can be rehabilitated.
