C. Auguste Dupin investigates two brutal deaths in a locked Paris apartment where every door and window appears secured from inside.
Off-duty gendarme Pierre Muset and his sweetheart Yvette hear screams from Madame L’Espanaye’s fourth-floor rooms in the Rue Morgue. Inside, the elderly woman lies murdered and her daughter has been forced high into the chimney. Witnesses report two voices speaking in different languages, yet the gold remains untouched and no human escape route seems possible.
Pierre hopes solving the case will earn a promotion and allow him to marry Yvette, so he turns to the brilliant but eccentric Dupin. Their examination of the windows, spring locks, physical violence, and contradictory testimony suggests that one voice did not belong to any nationality the witnesses recognized. A sailor, a straight razor, and an animal brought home from overseas begin to connect the impossible clues.
Adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s foundational detective story by George Lowther and starring Paul Hecht, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” combines Gothic horror with analytical deduction. The locked room, Paris setting, C. Auguste Dupin, and shocking nonhuman suspect helped establish conventions mystery fiction still uses today.
